It was my birthday yesterday. So much that I wanted to pack in to remember the day by. So many people that I wanted to speak to. Long lost friends I wanted to see. But the day is only so long and it did go by quickly. What I did do : I started the day out with a crazy intense boxing circuit class, followed by a lunch / shopping date with my boyfriend ( we went to the new anthropology store where I was in heaven and pretended I was in new york ), then off to dinner, drinks and a little kar-ee-oh-kee with friends and family. The picture with my sweet sis really says it all. Just a lovely cozy day. What more can a girl ask for ?

There was a year when I conquered many fears,
many dislikes, many unknowns, many "i have never".

One of them was diving into the cold lake water above.
Face first, without my usual testing and easing,
slowly inching myself in.

This may seem like a silly thing to most,
but I had spent my entire life up till that point
never having dove into a lake.

This photo made me think today
that I might need to challenge myself a little more this year.
As my new year is coming up,
I will look out for new lakes to dive into.

which I am awful at.

oh, poor little silly little sad little me.
So spoiled am I , that I am feeling lost.
Lost because I had to miss my fall trip to nyc.
the fall in nyc - gorgeous.
the fall here in dreariesville - grey
I didn't want to write about it, admit it, it's silly, but it's also true
and I like the truth !

the walking, i miss the walking - and apparently so do my thighs!
today my fat a__ ran around the park, over some benches, past a sketchy dude ( guy in park with clean beige boots, big sunglasses, large toque, small backpack)
let's toast to me doing that all over again tomorrow, perhaps minus the sketchy dude,
cause then i might have to find a new park.
let's hope the running helps, cause if i find the time and the money
i want to be on a sunshiny beach in the new year
and wearing a bathing suit might be essential.
whoa rant-aholic tonight, must write more !

perhaps travelling more would do

sticks in circular patterns, piled pebbles, arranged leaves, cracked pavement, painted nature, nature is art. he just brings our attention to it even more.

Next Friday I will be heading back to New York.

to be walking home from the cutest little bar in Greenwich village, 3am,

when it starts to rain and the cab driver doesn't know how to get to Hoboken, seriously?

But if he did, I wouldn't have seen an art magazine article about an old friend while waiting for the PATH, or the glow of the sky on the walk to the apartment, or the buildings fresh with rain against the city skyline, or the view of the train station across the cobblestone.

I wanted to stop right there and start painting !

OR return to my loft apartment that has a view of the city, pour a glass of wine and start painting - one day right!?!?

It is just around the corner from Beansprouts, but I don't make it in often enough.

Using only non-toxic paints and recycled materials his mixed media work displays animal inspired creations; both delicate and dark, whimsical, full of expression.

I am currently wondering the streets of NYC.

One of my favourite things in life, really!

And while wondering through the floors of the MOMA, one of my other favourite things to do, especially when I know I am going to turn the corner and

run face to face with Mr. Mark Rothko!

I was introduced to the works of Martin Kippenberger.

A heavy retrospective, diverse and disturbing, enlightening and emotional.

The collection of work varied from room to room, really from piece to piece and it left me with the feeling that this man's personality was as such.

Amongst all of the caos were some beautiful pieces.

My favourite? an untitled painting 240 x 300 cm large,

from a series of work that was titled " dear painter, paint for me"

( it is pictured above with the man on the couch) nice place to sit in my opinion.

The light from this painting struck me from across the room.

Reminded me of the first time I saw an Edward Hopper in the flesh.

ahhhhh a day at the MOMA, life is sweet.

New West at Midnight

It all started with some late night g chatting with Sarah...

"I want a big big painting for above our bed. Dark grey/light grey/red/orange/green.... wonder if we could do it together?. . . Okay, Monday if you are well??? ( i had a nasty cold) I would need to buy the huge canvas and paints" she said.

Well, I happened to have a huge canvas in my basement and nowhere to paint on it. She had the balcony, many cans of grey paint (long story), a heater, and a bag of Reese's peanut butter cups!

We tandum painted until our hands were frozen and before I gave myself bronchitis.
And this is what will soon be hanging on Sarah's bedroom wall . . .

And I got what I was asking for earlier . . .

And of course, a special memory and an enjoyable painting experience!

This was my favourite subway station in New York.

So many different textures here.

I wanted to cut out pieces of the wall and frame them.

Plaster, concrete, tiles, signs, dirt, paint, chipping paint, grey, blue, white?, black, yellow, orange.

You should have seen me trying to sneak pictures and not look like a tourist.

What camera? Didn't get many pictures. I know - silly!

So thanks to my friend Andrew for taking care of that for me!

I actually find it quite obvious but it seems to be catching people off guard.

I have been having fun sitting in the cafe quietly drinking my tea in the corner.

Anyhow, the work will be up until December so if you haven't been by for that Re-Entry brownie yet, you still have a chance to eat your brownie next to my paintings.

Here are my picks for the best pieces at the MOMA.

I love finding paintings by artists that i am familiar with, but that surprise me, that are not typical of their style.

The Rothko paintings are still by far my favourites though.

My breathe changes when i stand in front of them, shaking my head in awe.

Just got back from an amazing week! Nyc is always good to me. My only problem with going there is that i don't ever want to leave. Driving back from the airport last night noticing how green vancouver is, that's what we get from all that rain; cleanliness and green grass. This is lovely in the summer, but i am not inspired to paint green grass. I am inspired by the stone, the tiles, the brick, the dark streets, the glowing lights, the trains and the sounds of the subway, the chipping paint, the different heights of the buildings, the shadows, the signs, the bridges . . .

It has been a busy time at my house.
Paint has been flying. Estevan and I have been painting tandem in the living room, quite a lovely moment until he painted the couch. I love that he loves to paint of course, he is even quite good at critiquing.
Preparing for the DRIFT this weekend (detailed details to come)
Then I am off to NYC for a little business and some inspiration.

while perusing someone else's blogspot, i then clicked on one of their favourite sites and i came across this piece.

and i thought my arm was sore from painting!

If i wasn't renting my house i would have started writing in the corner already.

then just underneath this post was a post about an artist who's name i had been trying to remember all year . . . giving people clues about him and searching the dark parts of my brain for his name.

Then today TA DA there he was . . . Jose Gonzalez. I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT WHEN THAT HAPPENS!!!

Following your own path

It's late and too dark to paint. Of course i always want to paint when it is dark out. Arrgghh. This picture is the current inspiration along with "following your own path"

Even though my new apartment has lights in the hallway that mimic daylight, the light is still strange.

I've been painting up a storm for the DRIFT next weekend and very happy to be doing so, hopefully my right arm can make it.

I will post some new pics when they are ready.

An evening of vibrations

There certainly was something special in the air.

Sweet. Raw. Happenstance.

Vibrating. Penetrating. Enlightening. Intriguing.

Tones of frosted umber, charcoal with a touch of red, earthened cobalt, organic oatmeal, and a touch of skin (tone).

I thank you for a truly moving and inspirational evening . . . until next time.

. . . cannot tip a decision. We knew all along what was right for us to do. We just didn't listen!

Living on the finges of activity is a choice we can make. Always holding back, rather than becoming fully intimate with another is a choice we can make. It seems that there is a direct connection between creative thought and involvement in life. . .

The blanket is heavy, but my feet are light. As I float in a new direction.

As a friend said, "play the flute while you float"

The nature of a work of art is not to be a part, nor yet a copy of the real world ( as we commonly understand that phrase ). But a world in itself, independant, complete, autonomous; and to possess it fully you must enter that world, conform to it's laws, and ignore for the time the beliefs, aims, and particular conditions which belong to you in the other world of reality.

the ten year circle

it has been 10 years since i was in nyc.

it has been 7 years since i have been inspired, truly inspired to paint.

the colours and textures of the city.

the brick walls, the plaster, the lines, the textures, the mess.

the simple moments found in a city so complex.

just like the t-shirt says - i . . .

it took a few days to feel confident, nothing that navigating the subway on your own can't cure. i was so proud of myself!

north, south, torrential rain, east, west, over the bridge, under the tunnel, i went everywhere - well it felt like it anyways. i walked - alot!!!!!

clyfford still at the Met - oh my!

i breathed deeper.

i walked stronger.

i sat taller.

i sang in the shower - 3 x

i opened my eyes.

i opened my heart.

i broke something like a bull.

i listened. i was listened to.

i drank till dawn, danced till dawn, laughed till dawn.

i walked the village in heels - i just had to.

i am painting again - truly painting!
